Why Did Arnav Start The BBG?
Although my sister and I were born in the United States into what we feel is a modern family, the classical Indian traditions persist in our household. During Indian family gatherings, the women of the hosting family are expected to cook and then serve guests. From childhood to now, I have witnessed the disparity in my mother and sister’s obligations in comparison to my own. After my trip to South Africa, I noticed the parallel between the role of native African women and my own household! This fueled me to make a change within the perceived role of women in my community and on a broader application.
I created this program to fulfill my passion, working tirelessly to help others struggling with socioeconomic norms similar to those faced by my mother and sister. After many readings on women’s history, I learned women spent two times more of their time on unpaid domestic work, especially in developing countries. I believe empowering women with education and providing them the resources for economic equality will benefit not only women, but also the world as a whole. Empowering women to succeed financially will allow them to thrive as they should in the twenty-first century.

Our Facilitators
Kate Simmons
My name is Kate Simmons and I am the co-president and founder of Women’s Empowerment Club at Bergen County Academies. When my sister realized there was not an outlet available for the students at BCA to connect with their femininity, as well as advocating for those whose voices are overlooked, we decided to make a difference. With that, this project is an important representation of the club’s goals and the base that it was founded on. To make tangible change beyond the bounds of our high school will only deepen our connection with womanhood and our need to support one another.
Becca Slaten
My name is Becca Slaten, and I’m a part of the Women’s Empowerment Club at Bergen County Academies. I enjoy being part of this club because it allows me to help empower students at my school, as well as fundraise for charities such as the Malala Fund. I’m excited to be part of this project, so that we can make a difference beyond our school community and connect through the common goal of spreading awareness about women’s rights and empowering women to be their best selves.
